Setting Up Your Child’s First Device: A Step-by-Step Guide

From the conversation before day one to the parent app, contacts, safe zones, and school mode — a simple checklist for a smooth, safe start.

A first device goes much better when you set it up thoughtfully. Here’s a simple, step-by-step way to start — most of it takes a single afternoon.

1. Have the conversation first

Before the device is even on, agree on the basics together: when it’s used, where it lives at night, and what it’s for. Kids respect rules they helped set, and a five-minute conversation now prevents a lot of friction later.

2. Install and connect the parent app

Download the MeWatch parent app, then pair it with your child’s device by scanning the code on the device and following the prompts — once the device is connected to the network. This is the control center for everything that follows.

3. Add approved contacts

Add the people your child is allowed to call and message — parents, grandparents, a trusted neighbor. With approved-contacts-only calling, unknown numbers are blocked automatically, so strangers can’t get through.

4. Set safe zones and school mode

Create safe zones (geofences) for home, school, and activities so you’re alerted on arrival and departure. Turn on class / school mode for school hours, which silences everything but the clock and emergency calls.

5. Do a quick test run

Place a test call, press the SOS button together so your child knows how it works, and check that location shows up in the app. A two-minute test gives everyone confidence on day one.

That’s it

With the parent app set up, contacts approved, and safe zones in place, your child gets independence and you get peace of mind. New to the parent app? Here’s what it does, and how MeWatch works end to end.
